POST ONE

Good evening, lovely Readers!

I would love to tell you about something that has been bothering me for a long time. Sounds exciting, I know. But you’re here, you decided to give this blog a try, so grab a cup of tea (I’m drinking a vanilla almond blend) and read on with me for a minute.

I don’t feel like I am making a difference. Don’t get me wrong, if I stopped showing up to work, stopped coming home, etc. people would notice and I’m lucky enough that people would care. I’m not saying I don’t matter. I just feel like there is something else that I am meant to be doing that I have been missing. I feel like I am a reservoir of untapped potential (Be nice! Keep reading and save your comments for later). Actually, that phrase is kind of redundant. Dictionary.com defines potential as “Possible, as opposed to actual”, so all potential is untapped. That is what is bothering me.  My husband and I have been talking about it for months. If we see an opportunity, and we have a passion for it and the potential to do something about it, is that opportunity a choice or an assignment? I believe that God has designed us each for specific purposes with specific and unique missions or assignments to fulfill while we live this phase (the earthly phase) of our lives. Nobody get offended, but I don’t think we were put here for the purpose of having successful careers, building ourselves comfortable (earthly) retirements, and taking nice vacations. None of those things are bad! But I don’t think that the God of the Angel Armies, the Artist whose glory is reflected in the sunrises and sunsets, the Father who has the threads of each of our lives woven into the magnificent and intricate tapestry of His plan, created me or you with the sole purpose of having an impressive 401k. Our purpose/assignments are bigger than that.

Let me pause REALLY quickly to let you know – this is not a blog in which I plan to preach sermons at you! Obviously, my beliefs inform my thoughts, so I want you to know where this is coming from. This blog is meant to explore practical ways and start conversations about how we can identify our real-life purpose as well as turn our potential into constructive realities that will make a difference in the world.

Okay, back into it. Humans are wildly capable beings (hush – I know you can think of exceptions, but that just proves the rule). I personally feel that I have SO MUCH MORE to offer, but I have been at a loss as to what exactly I am supposed to do about it. When going over the Lord’s Prayer, I am stopped by the part that says “Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven” or “do what’s right – as above, so below” depending on the translation. I am part of “on Earth”. How can I live with integrity if I pray that prayer, but don’t attempt to follow God’s will in each area of my life, including finding and living out my assignment(s)?

So here we are – Alex and I have been taking inventory and making changes in all areas of our lives. This includes our relationship, our health, our kids, our finances, where we live, and so much more. Some of these were simple fixes, while some feel huge and complex, and we are still trying to figure them out. One thing that I do feel like I am called to do is to help connect people with their purpose/assignment. That’s the reason I am starting this blog. This tiny little space for telling others what I’ve seen to be true, for starting conversations, for sharing any learnings I find on this very broad topic. I have so many thoughts (shocking, I know – but get excited!). I don’t know where this is going, but I feel confident that this is something God is having me pursue. We discussed starting book clubs (I’m always up for a book club!), virtual book clubs, even WRITING a book (you read that right, little things like experience, skill, or lack thereof won’t get in MY way!) but I settled on a blog as a starting point.

So many subtopics to cover:

  • Finding your passion
  • Discovering your potential
  • Potential vs. Responsibility
  • Practical ways to turn potential into reality
  • What assignments look like in different phases of life
  • What living your purpose looks like
  • Etc.

Okay, my tea is finished and it’s time to go to bed. I’d love to hear from you! Post any thoughts, questions, etc. below! I’m planning on posting once a week, so I’ll talk to you again soon!
