POST FIVE – Vision

Good afternoon, visionary Readers,

I know you may be taking a quick break between tasks, or still checking off your daily to-dos, but I hope that you are able to find a cozy spot for a few minutes. I’m seated with a latte at one of my favorite coffee shops surrounded by wooden shelves, smelling all the beautiful blends of coffee and tea, and enjoying a few minutes of quiet. Well, to be perfectly honest, I wish it was quiet. The music selection today is NOT what I would have chosen. Overall, however, it has a pleasant ambience, and I hope you can find a few minutes of peace also.

I have been thinking about what it would mean if everyone were to connect with their purpose and live out their Assignments. Step into your imagination with me for a minute and see what the world could look like.

Imagine that you are working in a job you love, one that you feel really matters, that you are good at and making valuable contributions to, and that you are excited to go to work every day. Now imagine that everyone is in that situation, skillfully contributing to work they enjoy and believe in. Can you imagine the energy shift? Imagine everyone you encounter doing an excellent job at whatever they are working on and doing it cheerfully. Every artist you know is engaged in creative and innovative work, challenging our understanding of life and making our surroundings richer and more beautiful. Every leader is in a job with the right balance of autonomy and support to take their teams to new definitions of success. Every super-extravert that you know is connecting with people in a positive and meaningful way as their means to earn a living.

This would affect our entire lives. Imagine something as simple as going to a coffee shop (don’t know where that thought came from, just my imagination hard at work here). Imagine getting coffee that has been sourced and roasted to perfection by someone passionate and skilled, brewed and served by someone who not only appreciates the quality they are working with, but is excited about serving you a mug of delightful joe exactly the way you enjoy it. And imagine that you are rung up cheerfully by someone who truly enjoys interacting with you and delivering a superb service experience. Everywhere you go would be a source of encouragement, seeing people who are inspired and excited about what it is they do.

Hold on, Geneva. That sounds like a lovely daydream you’re having, but are you trying to tell me that every job is someone’s dream job? I know that’s not true. Some jobs are not anyone’s ideal. …Okay, fair point. In this current reality we are dealing with, that is absolutely true. However, keep on imagining this alternative world to its logical conclusion.

Who is responsible for creating these jobs or working environments which are so miserable? I would hazard a guess that it is a person or persons who are not 100% aligned with their purpose. So, imagine instead someone overseeing this work with purposeful, energetic, and innovative energy. Probably someone who takes these jobs in a whole new direction with the intent to make all jobs involved meaningful and rewarding for the people who care enough to pursue them. Maybe there wouldn’t be “bad” jobs or projects anymore if this were the case.

In C.S. Lewis’s novel, The Great Divorce, he talks about Earth as being the beginning of both Heaven and Hell, depending on which way you are going. Meaning, as you grow closer to God and your life conforms more to his will, you are not suddenly transported to Heaven, but your life and environment become a closer reflection of what Heaven looks like. This is how I think about us doing God’s will. In this better world we are picturing, we are all completing our purposes, contributing meaningfully, and living our passions. I have to think that this world would be at least a step closer to what Heaven is like. This is what following God’s will means. Doing what he would have us do here and now. I don’t think we are supposed to wait for Heaven to try to make things right. As above, so below, right?

I know this might sound a bit fantastical. A world where the right people are in the right places doing the right things and getting joy out of their life’s work? Sure, everyone living their true purpose may not be our current reality, but I can tell you one thing for certain. It will not become a reality until you connect with and commit to following your own life’s purpose. Worth some thought and… imagination?
